Pure Tone Assessment
Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA)
What is Pure Tone Audiometry?
A simple way of understanding Pure Tone Audiometry—a crucial element in audiometry in Australia—is that you raise your hand or press a button when you hear a sound. This process allows us to assess your current hearing level and evaluate if any hearing problems are present..
During a pure tone test, you can see that a sound of a specific frequency is played at different volumes repeatedly. When you are unable to hear a sound at a particular volume, we keep a track of it and further assess at which volume and frequencies you are unable to hear the sound. We repeat the test as we now play different sounds at different frequencies. All this information allows us to evaluate the patient’s hearing sensitivity, and all the points at which you have been unable to hear are noted on an audiogram.
This information we collect during the test is now compared against data that we consider normal hearing levels. This will help us evaluate if any hearing loss is present, and the plots on the audiogram we track, show us what frequencies you are affected byand to what extent.
Other Tests:
While Pure tone Audiometry tests are useful, we perform other tests for specific circumstances that help us treat your hearing loss with more accuracy
Hearing Test
- Bone Conduction Test
- Typanometry
- Speech Testing
- Air Conduction Test
- Acoustic Reflex testing
- Otoacoustic emissions
Bone Conduction Test:
These tests are used in particular to bypass the outer and middle ear to send sounds directly to the inner ear. It is most often used in scenarios where something is blocking the outer and middle year, and to specify certain types of hearing loss.
Tympanometry:
Tympanometry is the name of a test that aids in determining whether the middle ear is working properly. The tympanic membrane sometimes referred to as the eardrum, is located in front of the middle ear.
The purpose of the test is to determine how the tympanic membrane is functioning and moving in response to pressure variations. The exam aids us in locating and tracking any middle ear issues. Following the examination, we log the findings in a chart called a tympanogram.
Speech Testing
A speech discrimination test assesses how well you understand words. When hearing is damaged, often more than sound volume or quality is affected. In many cases, the sound quality can be distorted.
This hearing test measures the level of distortion. Poor speech distortion means voices are distorted and not loud enough.
Acoustic Reflex Testing:
Acoustic reflex testing is a diagnostic evaluation that measures involuntary muscle contractions in the middle ear in response to loud sounds. This test helps in understanding the integrity of the auditory system, providing valuable insights into potential hearing issues or abnormalities.
Bone Conduction Hearing Aid:
A bone conduction hearing aid is a specialized device that transmits sound vibrations directly to the inner ear through the bones of the skull. This technology is beneficial for individuals with certain types of hearing loss, especially those involving the outer or middle ear, bypassing these obstacles to improve auditory perception.
Pure Tone Assessment:
Pure tone assessment involves the measurement of an individual’s hearing thresholds at various frequencies. This comprehensive test helps identify the specific frequencies at which hearing loss may occur, aiding in the customization of appropriate interventions and hearing aid settings.
Understanding Pure Tone Audiometry:
Understanding Pure Tone Audiometry involves interpreting the results of pure tone tests to assess a person’s hearing sensitivity. By analyzing an audiogram, professionals can determine the extent and nature of hearing loss, facilitating the development of personalized treatment plans.
Otoacoustic Emissions:
Otoacoustic emissions refer to sounds generated by the inner ear in response to external stimuli. This non-invasive test assesses the health of the cochlea and can be used to detect certain types of hearing loss, providing valuable information for accurate diagnosis and intervention.
Hearing Level:
Hearing level, measured during various tests such as pure tone audiometry, indicates the softest sounds an individual can hear across different frequencies. This parameter is essential in diagnosing the degree and configuration of hearing loss, guiding the selection of appropriate management strategies.
These additional assessment services enhance the depth of our diagnostic capabilities, allowing our professionals at Enhance Hearing to offer precise and tailored solutions fordiverse hearing conditions.
